4K source material balloons storage and chokes uploads. HEVC in HandBrake cuts size roughly in half versus H.264 at similar quality — when you tune RF, presets and hardware encoders for UHD content.

When 4K HEVC makes sense

Deliver 4K when the platform and audience benefit — YouTube, Vimeo and modern TVs handle HEVC well. Skip 4K for email and legacy projectors; downscale to 1080p H.264 using the file size reduction tutorial instead. Confirm decode support on the weakest device in your chain before batching per the batch encoding guide.

RF and preset for UHD

Start at RF 24 for x265 4K and adjust after reviewing noise, grain and gradients. Slower presets buy efficiency; medium is acceptable for drafts. Software x265 preserves film grain better than GPU encoders — see the hardware acceleration guide for when NVENC HEVC is good enough.

Foundation settings live in the best HandBrake settings guide. Codec theory in the H.264 vs H.265 vs AV1 article explains why HEVC beats AVC at the same bitrate.

Audio, HDR and color

Keep AAC stereo for web unless delivering Atmos masters elsewhere. HDR HEVC requires preserving metadata — HandBrake support varies by source; verify output in VLC and professional monitors. SDR Rec.709 remains the safe default aligned with YouTube export settings.

Integration with editing pipelines

DaVinci Resolve exports massive 4K ProRes or DNx files; HandBrake HEVC creates streaming-friendly copies without tying up the NLE. Compare CLI alternatives in HandBrake vs FFmpeg when automating watch-folder deliveries from Resolve exports.

Storage planning and bitrate reality

Even efficient HEVC 4K files accumulate terabytes across wedding seasons and documentary series. Calculate disk headroom before batch jobs: a fifty-minute 4K interview at RF 24 may still land near four gigabytes. Pair archival HEVC with cloud cold storage policies. For client review links, generate parallel 1080p H.264 copies using the same queue overnight — two presets, one batch session, verified in VLC the next morning.
