Frequently asked questions.
Quick answers about video software, encoding and how ReviewForge works.
Is HandBrake really free?
Yes. HandBrake is open-source software published under the GNU GPL. There is no paid tier, trial period or ad-supported version. ReviewForge is also free to read and not affiliated with the HandBrake project.
What is the best video format for YouTube?
Upload MP4 with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio. Match your timeline resolution and frame rate. See our YouTube export settings tutorial for bitrates.
Should I use hardware or software encoding?
Hardware encoding (NVENC, Quick Sync) is faster and fine for streaming and drafts. Software x265 produces better fine detail for archival masters. We cover both in our hardware acceleration guide.
How does ReviewForge make money?
ReviewForge does not sell software or subscriptions. We may display advertising from Google AdSense and use analytics with your consent. Read our editorial policy for independence standards.
Can HandBrake edit videos?
HandBrake converts and compresses video but is not a timeline editor. Use DaVinci Resolve or similar for cuts, then HandBrake for delivery encoding.
MKV or MP4 — which container should I use?
MP4 has the widest device support. MKV handles multiple audio and subtitle tracks better for archiving. Convert MKV to MP4 with our HandBrake tutorial when sharing with general audiences.
